Phone overheats — when it is normal and when it is not

Every phone warms up under load. The difference between normal and problematic is WHEN it happens.

Normal

During gaming, navigation, long video or fast charging. The phone is warm but you can hold it. It cools down within 10–15 minutes after you stop.

Not normal

The phone is hot while nothing is running and the screen is off. It burns during ordinary texting. It shuts itself down from overheating. It warms up right around the camera or in one corner.

What to check first

In Settings → Battery see which app has been active in the background. An app stuck in a loop keeps the processor busy constantly — the phone gets hot and the battery drops fast even while you are not touching it.

Remove a thick case and try again. Some cases trap so much heat that the phone throttles itself to stay safe.

When it is hardware

Localised heat around the camera or the charging port usually means a problem in a specific component. A swollen battery also heats up — if the back cover looks slightly lifted or the screen is standing proud, stop using the phone and bring it in.

A swollen battery is not a cosmetic issue. It expands and can damage the screen from the inside.
