Before you sell your phone: backup, sign-out, reset

Three steps in the right order. Get the order wrong and you either lose data or hand over a locked phone.

1. Back up

· iPhone: an iCloud backup or a copy via computer.

· Android: a Google backup, plus a separate copy of your photos.

· Confirm the backup finished before you go on. "Almost done" is not done.

· Export separately: WhatsApp/Viber chats, two-factor codes, notes.

2. Two-factor authentication

Move the codes from your authenticator app to the new device BEFORE resetting. This is the step people forget and then lose access to their email or bank.

3. Sign out

· iPhone: Settings → your name → Sign Out. Turn off Find My.

· Android: Settings → Accounts → remove the Google account.

· Take out the SIM and microSD card.

4. Factory reset

Only now. Reset and leave the phone on the setup screen — that way the buyer can see the device is clean.

What to keep

The box, the cable and the proof of purchase. A complete phone with an invoice sells faster and for more.
