IMEI check: how to tell if a phone is stolen or blocked
The first check on any used phone. Two minutes that can save your money.
The IMEI is the unique number of every device. If a phone has been reported stolen or has unpaid instalments with a carrier, it can be blocked from the network — and becomes practically useless.
How to find the IMEI
· Dial *#06# — the number appears on screen immediately.
· Settings → General → About (iPhone) or Settings → About phone (Android).
· On the box and on the invoice.
· On an iPhone the IMEI is also engraved on the SIM tray.
What to compare
The number on screen, the number on the box and the number in the seller's records must match. A mismatch means a replaced logic board or a box from another device.
Where to check
· Free IMEI services show the model, production date and blacklist status.
· For a lock with a Bulgarian carrier, ask the carrier directly.
· Check whether the device appears on lost-device lists.
Red flags
· The seller refuses to give you the IMEI before meeting.
· The IMEI on screen does not match the one on the box.
· The lookup returns "blacklisted" or "lost".
· The price is drastically below market with no explanation.
If any of these apply, walk away. A blocked phone cannot be unlocked by paying a third party.
