Second-hand tablet: what to check and what does not matter
Tablets see gentler use than phones, but they carry their own specific risks.
First: Wi-Fi or Cellular
Cellular versions have a SIM slot and cost more. If you do not plan to use mobile data, the Wi-Fi version is the smarter buy.
Screen — more important than on a phone
A large surface forgives less. Check for:
· uneven backlight along the edges,
· pressure marks in the middle,
· lifted glass — on tablets a swollen battery shows there first.
Battery
Tablets last longer between charges, which means fewer cycles. Dropping from 100% to around 80% over two hours of video is normal.
Software support
Check whether the model still receives updates. An old tablet out of support is not a good deal even cheap — banking and streaming apps stop working first.
Accessories
A stylus and keyboard are expensive separately. If they are included, ask to test them — pens have their own battery, which also wears out.
What does not matter
Light marks on the back. A tablet usually lives in a case.
