A safe deal: where to meet, how to pay, what to ask for
Most scams stop with three habits. They take minutes and cost nothing.
The place
Meet in a shop, a mall or another well-lit place with people around. A refusal to meet in public is an answer in itself.
Payment
· Pay on the spot, after you have seen and tested the device.
· Do not send a deposit to a stranger — that is the most common scheme.
· Be careful with cash-on-delivery couriers for expensive phones: you pay before you open the parcel.
· For large amounts of cash, a bank office or a shop is safer.
Paperwork
Ask for a sales document with: model, IMEI, price, date and the seller's details. From a trader, an invoice or a receipt. Without the IMEI on the document, a warranty claim is hard to prove.
The test before paying
· IMEI check.
· Account released — no iCloud or Google lock.
· Screen on white and black backgrounds.
· A call, speaker, microphone, Wi-Fi, cameras.
· All buttons and charging.
